Tips & Tricks: Foils

In this edition of the pcPolyzine Beginner's Corner, we'll share some different ways to use foil with your polymer clay projects!

Incorporating foils into your polymer clay work adds color, texture, and so much shine! And there are countless ways to use foil to create a unique and eye-catching piece of art. Here are a few of our favorites:

Place on top: Probably the easiest way to use foil in your polymer clay art is to lay it on top of your clay. This could be done in one big sheet/section, or you can cut small pieces and arrange them on your clay to create patterns. You should burnish the foil once it's in place to ensure it holds.

Crackle: Again, start with a piece of conditioned clay and place a piece of foil on the top. Gently roll the clay and foil through your pasta machine or with your acrylic roller to thin the sheet of clay. While it thins, it also crackles the foil for a gorgeous effect!

Removing some foil:
Just as before when you're placing your foil onto the clay, you can take it a step further and add texture and design by using a texture sheet or stamp. You may like it just the way it is. Or you can selectively remove parts of the foil to expose the clay again. To do this, simply place a piece of clear office tape on the parts of foil you'd like to remove. Gently pull the tape back up and watch the magic happen!

Foil & Inks: To take your crackle foil look one more step further, you can then drop different colored alcohol inks on your crackled clay slab to dye the clay and create brand new color schemes!
